Ironic???

Ironic maybe that as you could see from a previous post I was in Philadelphia a couple of days before the President of the US was there making his case for the continuing war in Iraq, again. And repeating the same words, again. Invoking 9/11, again. Making veiled references that Iraq was maybe connected to 9/11 (he didn't make any direct references, but there was a lot of obfuscation, and if you weren't listening closely, you would think that Iraq perpetrated the entire 9/11 attack scenario), again. Pitching the same crap over and over again. So what was ironic about his being in the birthplace of our country and the birthplace of our beloved Constitution?

Bush makes an Oopsy!

Well it appears that a few days later it has now come out that he has been more or less trampling all over it since a few days after 9/11. Yes, if you haven't heard about it, President Bush, your President, my President issued an order saying that it was OK for the NSA to spy on Americans without having to get a court order to do so. Of course I have had discussions with Bush supporters who are right behind this. We need this for National security they say. Well, truly and honestly, if it means getting blown up by a terrorist and surrendering my own civil liberties for so-called "security", I'll take the bomb thank you very much. This is how these things get started. First, it's just a few people, and people support it, then it's a few more, and a few more, and more and more until it spins out of control, and then when it hits you, you then realize that it might be too late to do anything about. I for one I'm glad that this has come out now, when it has only been perpetrated upon 500 or so citizens of the US, and in a telling sign, there is no evidence that this helped stop terrorism in the United States or abroad. The Bush administration will tell you that it helped stop one attack that was being planned to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge, but that is not the entire truth. The guy they eavesdropped on didn't get recorded and spied on until AFTER he had been taken in as a suspect in potential terrorist plots. They wanted to see who he called from his cell phone while he was in jail, or when they allowed him to use it, or something like that. Can you say big brother is watching? The NSA has some truly scary technology that I'm sure we don't know much or anything about for the most part. I have seen shows where they can pull cell phone calls right out of the ether, record them, translate them, and have a transcript in a short amount of time. Now, this order that Bush gave was so sketchy, that there were some NSA agents who refused, flat our refused to do it, because it was of a questionable legality, at least in their minds. Already, the Bush White House is spinning this, and it is an indefensible position, and nobody in their right mind should support this one either side of the political spectrum. Nobody. Not democrats, and not republicans. If a politician comes out and says that he or she supports this, the people should put their say in when that politician comes up for re-election either in 2006 or 2008, and vote he or she out of office. This is America isn't it? Once again, our government is doing things in the name of protecting us that takes away our civil liberties and freedoms, and as I said before, I rather take a bomb in the ass than give anything up. What is this guy thinking? Oh, that's right, the mealy mouthed son of a bitch (AKA George W. Bush) doesn't think. He just does what "he think is right for the American people," you know, without regard to that pesky little document called the Constitution of the United States of America. I hate it when that thing gets in the way of what our President wants to do. Can we impeach him now? Please? Can we, can we, please? Lets' look at the short list of bad things he's done since he's arrived in office:

1. Depleted the federal budget surplus
2. Created the largest deficit ever recorded
3. Took us to war (2x)
4. Signed secret orders to allow spying on Americans
5. 2 words, Valerie Plame
6. Destroyed most environmental protections put into place by previous administrations
7. Let N. Korea get nuclear weapons
8. Let Iran start up their nuclear program again
9. Gave massive tax cuts to the rich
10. Took funding from popular social programs
11. Lied to the American people about the reasons for war

And so on and so forth, I could go on for hours of things that he has done that I don't like. The one thing I know that he has done that I do live, extension of daylight savings time. In 2007, we'll get an extra month of an extra hour of light. Instead of the first week of April for the time to "spring" ahead, it will be the first week of March. That's a good thing. But that's about it for him, everything else he's done has turned to shit.

I would encourage anyone reading this to write to their Congresspeople and express your outrage at what has happened today, and what was revealed today, and make sure you ask that this be investigated to the fullest. If we don't hold our President accountable who will? It's time for people to stop being afraid of the President and that the terrorists are going to "get us", and it's time to call him to the carpet on his BS that he's espousing in the name of patriotism and America. Makes me sick, very sick. At the least though, today, the Patriot Act was not approved in the Senate, which means that there were some moderate republicans who turned to the "dark side" and voted with the democrats on this issue. This is good, very good. I think the tide is turning, and the Bush administration is starting to go down in flames little by little. It's bad though, because as the President fails, the nation starts to fail as well, and well, I like America and want it to be great again, but under the leadership of a muppet, I don't see how. Bush needs to go. I'll be holding my breath for the next 3 years on this administration, and hope that we don't invade Iran next. I think the Founding Fathers just turned over in their graves.

he did not lie to the american people about going to war...he was lied TO and did not carefully enough examine his intelligence. the cause for concern should be our federal government as a whole and how they accept and promote mediocrity.

Funny you should mention that, and the American people could be held accountable for that as well, for electing a simp to the head office of our nation.

He did lie to the American people, as far as I can tell. He keeps saying that the intelligence was incorrect, and that it was wrong, but then there are opposing viewpoints of that. There are and were people who were there telling him that indeed, the information was incorrect, and that the main reason for going to war, WMDs, were not there. Lead weapons inspector for the UN told the US this. There is the Downing Street Memo, there was the simple fact that wespons inspectors couldn't find weapons, and yet, we still went to war to oust someone who was not a threat to the US national security. So indeed, he lied or mis-led the American people. For months leading up to it, he kept telling us we KNOW where those weapons are, his cronies said the same things. He lied. And anytime information came out that was contrary to what he believed, the right wing attack machine would go into effect denouncing the person bringing forth the information instead of actually going after the message. Attack the messenger, not the message, that's their MO. Continues to be. Such as, this information comes out about these wiretaps. What's the first thing that I hear from the right wing? The person who wrote the article has a book coming out and he's trying to promote that. Yeah, I don't believe a damn word this man says.

How about Scooter Libby and Karl Rove never had anything to do with outing Valerie Plame? Another one of his lies. They did have a lot to do with it. I now question everything that escapes from his lips. If you actually believe the line of he had bad intelligence, and that everyone else saw what he saw, damn..

you need to read more and stop watching american media. they lie too you know.

read "the coming anarchy" by richard kaplan and you will not be able to blame everything on GWB. read that and then we can discuss this reasonably.

p.s. i am not a bush supporter.

Stinky,

just followed your OOPSY link and take advice from your sister, don't follow CNN. they are as biased as everyone else. CNN is a piece of proverbial shit. all US news agencies are as a matter of fact. Even NPR is becoming a bit too biased for me, leaning to the right a little. anyway, CNN is a far fetched, shrill news agency. I am also not sure if there is a news agency worth following on the whole, so i briefly look at them all and you know what? they say completely opposite things!!! it is amazing! seriously...once news source will say one thing, and another news source the opposite. hit the books bro.

I do believe that some news agencies can be read and looked at, I just look at CNN mostly because, well, because it's there. Believe it or not, I do get a whole wide range of stuff from all over. I check out The Guardian a lot out of the UK, Washington Post, New York Times, CNN, Fox, The Telegraph, and so on.

I do believe that our friend George has stepped in it so to speak with executing these wiretaps. We'll see what shakes loose.

frankly, i am glad he is wiretapping the m-fers. if you aren't doing anything wrong, you shouldn't be worried (not you, literally, but whoever). look, i am a civil libertarian and a strong democrat, however, there is really only one thing i believe our government should be a part of and that is national security. i mean, i don't want to be like israel or anything, but if he doesn't do this, and something happens AGAIN, then fingers will wag at him. it's a no win situation.

I wholeheartedly disagree.

This impinges on your civil liberties and your freedoms as an American citizen. He didn't need to do this, FISA provides an outlet for getting a warrant for wiretapping and eavesdropping, he just went above and beyond the law is what he did. It's pretty clear that he broke the law after I've had a chance to read the FISA provisions and read stories about them. There was no need for him to sign off on these secret wiretaps, and there was no reason why he couldn't get a warrant to get this done.

The whole argument of if you're not doing something wrong then you have nothing to worry about doesn't hold water. Why? Because if the President gets to randomly select which laws to abide by, and which ones he doesn't have to abide by, then who is to say that he doesn't sign another order down the line saying whatever it is you're doing that is legal, is no longer legal, and they come and get you. Far fetched? No really. I got an e-mail from the SO today about a story from Massachusetts where a student checked out Mao's Little Red Book to work on a paper about facism and totalitarianism, and guess what happened? The department of homeland security came and took him in for questioning. For reading a book..

The President cannot be above the law, he is supposed to uphold the law. Regardless if he did it for a good intention (such as catching terrorists), or if he did it for selfish reasons (another story today that came out about political activist groups who were being wiretapped by the federal government under the Patriot Act, which is supposed to thwart terrorists, not politcal action groups). It doesn't matter. If he broke the law, there is no good reason for it.

PS: We will experience another terrorist attack (or attacks God forbid) in the US no matter WHAT anyone does. Why? Because for the simple reason that if you have a group of people that are willing to give their lives in order to take someone else's; how do you disuade someone like that from carrying out their plan? They're willing to die and take you out with them. It's going to happen, and we won't be able to blame anyone for it, except for the people that carried it out. If Bush is in office, he really won't be to blame, if someone else is in office, I wouldn't blame them either. I don't blame Bush for the attacks on 9/11, as I don't think that they could have been stopped anyway at that point in time.
